Irvine-based demolition company, Jackson Demo, continued work on removing ductwork at the Boys and Girls Club in Costa Mesa as a part of recent remodel. Crew members also removed asbestos-containing floor tiles and linoleum from two office areas.
“Asbestos is a very dangerous threat,” said Supervisor, Chris Jackson. “Our job is to go in make sure all the hazardous materials are removed properly so that the children are safe.”
Commonly used in construction materials up until the 1980s, asbestos has been found to cause serious respiratory diseases including cancer. Only properly licensed contractors are permitted to remove asbestos.
“It looked like someone else had gone in and put in new ductwork previously, but they hadn’t removed the old ducting that contained asbestos,” Jackson added. “We see this a lot with homeowners who are surprised to learn that the person they hired never removed the old system.”
Asbestos can be found in a variety of building materials including drywall, flooring, insulation, roofing and siding material and much more. The only way to know whether materials contain the substance is to have it tested prior to disturbing it.
