Crew members of Irvine-based demolition and abatement company, Jackson Demo, recently completed the trenching and removal of an 4 to 24-inch diameter underground asbestos transite pipe. The project has been ongoing for the past five years and required careful coordination of heavy equipment. Excavators, loaders, rock trucks, and forklifts were brought in to load the abandoned water line into bins and end dump trucks for proper disposal at asbestos landfills. Jackson Demo has abated more than seven miles of asbestos transite to date for this ongoing development.
Transite pipe contains asbestos-cement materials that are regulated by US government and must be properly contained and disposed of. Asbestos was commonly used in building materials up until the 1980s when the Occupational Safety and Health Administrations (OSHA) banned it and began regulating mitigation of the material. When disturbed, asbestos fibers are carcinogenic and known to cause cancer and respiratory diseases.
Hazardous Materials Clean Up
Supervisor Chris Jackson of Jackson Demo headed up the project. “In order to make way for the development of new homes and retail and park projects, the former marine base has to be properly cleaned up,” Jackson said. “Removing the pipe was a big job, but one that will allow developers to begin the next phase of construction.”
FivePoint owns the property where the pipe was removed and contracted Jackson Demo to remove the pipe. In the state of California, specially licensed contractors are required to abate hazardous materials such as asbestos.
The Great Park’s 1,300 acres has been the site of a major clean up effort since the 1990s with the removal of hazardous materials from the former base due to aircraft and vehicle maintenance.
Jackson Demo has been in the demolition and abatement industry for more than 30 years. From commercial to residential to industrial projects, their crew members are specially trained on the guidelines of how to remove and dispose of hazardous materials. In addition to asbestos removal, the company also handles the removal of mold, lead, fuel and other chemicals. Check out their latest projects or visit their website for a free quote.
