Jackson Demo’s night crew took on nearly 8,000 feet of office space during a recent workspace remodel in downtown Los Angeles. Crew members removed approximately 3,000 square feet of drywall, 1,500 feet of flooring material, as wells as cabinetry, a kitchen break lounge, cubicle offices and fireproofing material containing asbestos to make way for a fresh, new look.
“It was a challenging demolition project,” said Chris Jackson, a supervisor with Jackson Demo. “Even bringing up supplies to the 22nd floor was tricky because the service elevator went out at one point and we had to carry up ladders and other supplies.”
Often times office demolition jobs require more planning in order to ensure the least amount of impact on other workers who share the space. There is a significant amount of prep work required in order to contain the project and ensure everyone’s safety. The US government regulates and sets the standard for proper handling of hazardous materials including the removal of asbestos, a toxic substance that can cause a variety of health issues including lung cancer. Consumers can find more information about those regulations through the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
Asbestos-Containing Building Materials
And just like a residential remodel, surprises often lurk behind walls. “Once you open up the drywall, other issues can crop up, like unexpected pipes, wiring and in some cases hazardous materials like mold.”
For this particular job, crew members were not necessarily expecting the 700 square feet of fire proofing material in the upper deck and structural beams behind the drywall. While many contractors would need to hire a subcontractor to abate the asbestos found in the fire proofing material, Jackson Demo was able to save the client time and money because they already have the proper state licensing and experience to handle hazardous waste.
“From the prep and containment of the project, to the actual demolition and deconstruction, our number one priority is always ensuring the health and safety of everyone involved,” Jackson added.
