Crew members completed the removal of more than 4,000 square feet of acoustic ceiling containing asbestos located in the showroom and hallway of the former car dealership located in downtown LA on Figueroa Street. The commercial space sits on a 1.14 acre site and was recently purchased by Lyft.
“It was a big commercial project,” said Rich Jackson, project manager at Jackson Demo. “We also removed ceiling tiles, fluorescent lights, fixtures and mastic floor tiles.”
This is the second large project in Los Angeles that the company has completed this month. Crew members recently completed a high rise job with over 8,000 square feet of office space.
Materials containing asbestos and mercury must be properly removed and hauled away according to the government regulations set by CAL OSHA and South Coast AQMD. Asbestos was a common building material up until the 1980s when it was discovered that tiny fibers, when disturbed, can be released into the air, causing dangerous health conditions including cancer.
The crew was also hired to removed lead-based paint on the window frames and disposed of other hazardous waste materials including HVAC chemicals and hydraulic lift oil. The two-week project required a larger crew with the technical skills to properly handle the hazardous waste.
